Surgical practice is guided largely by clinical experience and tradition, with evidence generated from experimental studies often distrusted. The observational nature of experience and tradition may lead to bias, and less biased experimental evidence often contradicts the observational evidence. This lecture will make the case for surgeon bias in surgical decision making, and the need to generate and recognise experimental evidence as a less biased estimate of surgical effectiveness.
